There's two things I truly love about summer - spending time in the great outdoors and a good picnic. Combine both and I'm a pretty happy and content camper. Last weekend, my family and I set out to one of our favorite parks in Portland - Cathedral Park in the up and coming St. Johns neighborhood - for a Sunday morning breakfast picnic (whoever said picnics were limited to just lunch and dinner!?). Having first stopped at St. Johns Coffee Roasters in downtown St. Johns to grab some cups of java, we headed to the park for some morning fun.

Who doesn't love some fresh flowers, hot coffee and sweet pastries on a bright summer morning? Emmy was particularly a fan of the bran muffin - yum! I highly recommend you add a breakfast picnic to your weekend plans.

Cathedral Park is the perfect place for a toddler to explore - wide open grassy spaces for them to run and play and low steps for them to practice those gross motor skills. Scattered throughout the park stand tall oak trees that offer ample amount of shade on these endlessly sunny summer days. You can easily spend an hour or two picnicking, playing, reading, etc. so make sure to bring a comfy blanket and prepare to settle in for a while.

Cathedral Park sits on the banks of the Willamette River in northeast Portland. St. Johns Bridge - the bridge under which the park rests - received it's name because of the specific type of Gothic arches used to build it that resemble those of which you'd find in an old European church. Built in 1931, the bridge is the only one that can boast the title of "the only steel suspension bridge in Portland" - a noble feat in our bridge-heavy city (12 bridges to be exact!).

Cathedral Park is a must see in the Portland area! Be sure to put this park on your list of places to explore - it's a true gem.
